The next film from Mamoru Oshii (Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, Sky Crawlers) is Assault Girls, a live-action sci-fi flick. It’s a follow-up to a planned trilogy that started with the short “Assault Girl (Hineko the Kentucky)” and you can enjoy it after the cut.

I was raised on a steady diet of modernist/futuristic design and slipstream sci-fi. One of the most influential films of my youth was Tron. I learned to love Sid Meads design and fell head over heels for the metaphors that Tron represented. Tron is beyond important to me. It is a foundation. It is formative. Without it I wouldn't love what I love or do what I do.

It's the story of the tragic hero and the means by with which he maneuvers through a world that at it's core he understands but his new interface goes beyond simple hand eye coordination and coding.

Alex Wiltshire (@rotational) at rotational.co.uk has captured a beautiful collection of 'postcards' from inside Wipeout HDs photo mode. Beyond being absolutely biased due to my fascination with anything Wipeout related these shots are still beautiful and composed well under a difficult medium. He puts it so fucking well.

This game is all about pushing visual, graphical, environmental and neurological boundaries. It's a touchstone for me personally. From it's late 90's soundtracks and prototype cameo in 'Hackers' to the art direction by The Designers Republic. Check it out.
